Girls Education Women Empowerment & livelihood-GEWEL 2 Keeping girls in School and beyond initiative

Ministry of Education- Keeping Girls in School and beyond Initiative
Africa
2026

Project Summary

Our proposed solution builds on the Keeping girls in School (KGS) initiative to address barriers that limit girls’ access to education and future workforce opportunities in Zambia. It targets vulnerable adolescent girls, particularly those at risk of dropping out due to poverty, early marriage, pregnancy, and school-related gender-based violence, in both rural and urban contexts.

The solution integrates financial support, case management, life skills training, and mentorship to improve retention, completion, and transition to higher education or skills pathways. It also strengthens foundational competencies such as literacy, numeracy & critical thinking, while promoting digital readiness for future engagement in ICT & AI-related fields.

With over 190,000 girls supported , the project aims to improve educational outcomes, reduce gender disparities, and increase participation of girls in future oriented sector.

Presentation of the Organization

The KGS and Beyond initiative is a World Bank supported programme implemented by the Ministry of Education under the Girls Education Women Empowerement and Livelihood project -2 (GEWEL 2). It aims to support vulnerable school girls in grade 4 to 12 by reducing financial & social barriers to education. Building on GEWEL 1, which supported over 173,000 girls, GEWEL 2 targets to reach 262,444 girls by 2028. The project provides education grants, sanitary pads, school fees and tertiary education support.
