Khmelnytskyi’s initiative transforms waste management into a youth-driven urban climate adaptation solution aligned with European circular economy principles. The project combines recycling, waste reduction, composting, reuse practices, environmental education, and community engagement to strengthen sustainable urban development. A key component is the interactive GuFi Center — Ukraine’s only waste management education space for children and youth — which empowers young people through hands-on learning, workshops, and climate awareness activities. The initiative also includes the Ecobus mobile hazardous waste collection service, municipal Waste Management Centres, and the “Library of Things” initiative promoting reuse culture and sustainable consumption. Together, these initiatives have significantly increased environmental awareness and waste sorting among residents.
The Khmelnytskyi City Council, through the Khmelnytskyi City Development Agency, advances the city’s strategic and economic development. As a municipal institution, the Agency supports the implementation of key development initiatives, mobilises external resources and investment, and builds partnerships with international institutions to drive sustainable urban development.
