Community Evidence for Mining Accountability in Africa

Project Summary

Southern Africa Resource Watch (SARW) has built an African-led accountability infrastructure for mining-affected communities and a fair minerals transition. At its centre is the Africa Mining Accountability Platform (AMAP), which enables communities and monitors to document mining-related environmental, social, labour and governance harms, structure evidence, and support escalation through SARW’s accountability systems. The project links AMAP’s community evidence with SARW's African Critical Minerals Atlas (ACMA), which makes critical minerals projects, ownership, value chains and ESG risks visible and comparable. It also connects community reporting to Pamoja Critical Minerals Alliance mobilisation and CASA protection for civic space and human rights defenders. Together, these tools help communities move from isolated complaints to structured evidence, advocacy and accountability.

Presentation of the Organization

Southern Africa Resource Watch is a registered non-profit organisation working on natural resource governance, corporate accountability and community rights in Southern Africa. It combines research, advocacy, policy engagement, community-based monitoring and digital accountability tools, including AMAP and ACMA/Atlas, to strengthen African-led oversight of mining and critical minerals governance.
