Presentation of the project

The Madini project seeks to enhance the security conditions and livelihoods of mining communities in Eastern DR Congo by strengthening the governance structures of the artisanal mining sector, promoting adherence to OECD due diligence standards across mineral supply chains, and supporting multi-stakeholder forums to better address conflicts in mining areas.

In its first phase (2019-2024), the project helped to resolve dozens of conflicts in targeted mining areas by reducing the illegal presence of armed actors and helping the Congolese government improve laws and regulations for artisanal mining. This work will continue during the project’s 2nd phase (2024-2026), with a greater emphasis on improving the accountability of local and international actors and amplifying community and civil society voices from the Congo and the sub-region to advocate for the respect of international standards when sourcing critical minerals from the region.

Presentation of the organization

The Madini project is a consortium of 5 organizations with expertise in conflict analysis, peacebuilding, and governance of the artisanal mining sector. This consortium is led by International Alert (IA) with Congolese NGO partners Observatoire Gouvernance et Paix (OGP) and Justice Plus (JP), international partner International Peace Information Service and a new Congolese partner soon to be selected. IA ensures the strategic and technical lead for the project, while the other partners are responsible for the implementation of the project in their provinces or technical domains.
