Project Summary

The Tech4Nature Mexico project uses AI systems and advanced technologies to monitor and protect key species, like jaguars, while enhancing climate resilience and biodiversity in the Yucatán Peninsula. The project, co-led with Indigenous and youth communities, involves collaborations with the Yucatán government, IUCN, Huawei, UPY, and local partners. AI-powered systems, trained with camera trap and acoustic data, identify species and monitor ecosystems. This initiative has developed tools for jaguar identification and species detection, impacting conservation policy and community well-being, while building local capacity on digital technologies for conservation and tools to monitor biodiversity to help manage their ecosystems and inform policy. Recognized globally, Tech4Nature demonstrates the power of AI in ethical, socially just biodiversity conservation and innovative nature financing.
