Water resilient cities

Due to climate change, extreme weather events are becoming frequent, threatening the proper functioning of cities and showing how crucial water management is to city planning. Fragmented governance of river watersheds is misaligned with the necessity to make cohesive decisions about ecological systems that extend beyond administrative borders. Our project consists of urban design solutions at the city level and governance tools at the watershed scale to better adapt human settlements to the surrounding water networks. We have applied this multiscalar and pluritemporal approach to the Moskva river, reimagining the role of urban infrastructure and public space towards sustainable stormwater management and flood resiliency, and to the Volga river watershed, where 40% of the Russian population lives, towards new forms of collaborative governance to improve water management.
