Project Summary

Afghanistan’s conflicts are often viewed through a geopolitical lens, yet local drivers—ethnic diversity, religious divides, economic inequality, & resource competition—regularly fuel instability. OMID project by Aga Khan Foundation addressed these root causes by empowering communities to resolve disputes, promote inclusion, and improve livelihoods.

Operating in 40 districts across 8 provinces, OMID reached 140K people, focusing on women and the poor, strengthened community institutions capacity to prevent & manage conflicts. Successes include resolving water disputes in Yakawlang village inhabited by different ethnic groups, through a community-built canal- applying the power of pluralism and collective action.

Grounded in the idea of respectful collaboration OMID offers a scalable model for peacebuilding & inclusive development in fragile contexts.

 

Presentation of the Organization

Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) Afghanistan is part of the Aga Khan Development Network, dedicated to improving quality of life in fragile contexts. It supports inclusive, community-driven development through programs in health, education, agriculture, and civil society. As OMID’s lead implementer, AKF brings deep local knowledge, trusted community relationships, and technical expertise to foster peace, gender equity, and sustainable livelihoods across Afghanistan.
