Jigsaw is a unit within Alphabet that builds technology to tackle some of the toughest global security challenges facing the world today—from thwarting online censorship to mitigating the threats from digital attacks to countering violent extremism to protecting people from online harassment. Project Shield — DDoS attacks have become a powerful tool for censoring small and mid-level publishers, and attacks totaled 7.5 million in 2017. Project Shield is a free service that uses Google technology to protect news sites and free expression from DDoS attacks on the web. Shield not only defended the premier security blog against the then-largest DDoS attack in history, but it also now protects hundreds of sites in dozens of nations around the world. (Wired, Google Blog, TechCrunch, KrebsOnSecurity) Protect Your Election — Protect Your Election (PYE, or Protection Elections in France) is a suite of free tools from Google and Alphabet's Jigsaw for publishers, journalists, NGOs, and election monitoring sites to help protect election information from digital attacks. Project Shield is a free service that protects free expression from DDoS attacks — no matter the size — on the web. Password Alert is a Chrome extension that helps protect against phishing attacks by alerting you if a website is trying to steal your Google password. Another tool offered by PYE is 2-Step Verification, which provides an extra layer of defense to keep your account secure. (WIRED, Fortune, Reuters)
