Accurate maps do not exist for many of the most vulnerable places in the world. If they do, they often require expensive software or technical skills to use. We are democratizing and expanding access to open mapping technology so that communities can quickly and easily create and use open maps and data to better prepare for and respond to disasters.
Our AI-assisted mapping solution (fAIr) allows communities to create a customized mapping model that accelerates the production of accurate local maps. Our solution is open source and trained by community members to meet their specific needs in order to minimize bias. With up-to-date maps, communities can identify how to better respond to disasters. For example, disaster management officials are using this technology to map places at risk of flooding or landslides to improve planning and preparedness for these hazards.

Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is an international team dedicated to creating missing data on vulnerable places and people worldwide. We collaborate with communities and partners around the world to make free and open maps based on local, lived experience using simple tools to solve local challenges. With maps as digital public goods, information is available to make better and faster decisions, communities are more resilient, and missing maps are no longer a factor in human suffering.
