The humanitarian situation in Afghanistan is one of the most severe and complex crises in the world. An estimated 9.4 million Afghans are currently in need of life-saving assistance. Awaaz Afghanistan, the first nationwide inter-agency humanitarian call centre, is funded by the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund, the European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid, UNHCR and WFP. Implemented by UNOPS, the call centre ensures that vulnerable people – including returnees and those affected by conflict and natural disasters – can voice their concerns and receive critical information and support in times of need. Since 2018, the multilingual operators have handled more than 130,000 calls. The project uniquely provides transparency and accountability solutions, facilitating a real-time two-way flow of information between affected populations and the entire humanitarian community.
