2022-23 Scale-up project
The Global Index on Responsible AI (“GIRAI” or “Global Index”) is a multi-year project that aims to advance and expand the global movement and agenda on responsible AI. It aims to measure the evolution of commitment and progress on the implementation of responsible AI principles and practice globally in more than 120 countries and be a key reference and resource on responsible AI for decision-makers and researchers.
In its diverse global reach, the project aims to amplify the full breadth of experiences and expertise from different regions, specifically those in the Global South, and their efforts to meet their human rights obligations and uphold principles for responsible use in the development and use of AI.
The GIRAI is being co-created with a range of stakeholders to ensure that inputs, perspectives, and interests of underserved and marginalized groups are centered.
Over the past year, the Global Index has established its core team and an expert advisory committee. It has also designed its conceptual framework and methodology which it has piloted in 10 countries across the globe through its established Global Research Network composed of 11 Regional Research Hubs (RRH) that will support data collection. The Index was also selected as one of the top 100 solutions for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI).
“The Global AI Index is a wonderful tool, generating key data on responsible AI commitments and progress in 120 countries.”
Gabriela Ramos, Assistant Director General for Social and Human Sciences, UNESCO
