Governance of Geoengineering

Carnegie Climate Geoengineering Governance Initiative (C2G2)
International
2018

Current climate projections suggest that despite ongoing efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change, global warming continues to pose significant risks to natural and human systems. The project aims to strengthen multilateral governance for new techniques that are being explored to reduce climate risk by artificially cooling the planet using solar radiation modification (SRM). While SRM may effectively reduce global temperatures alongside deep emissions reductions and carbon dioxide removal, it faces large uncertainties and poses significant potential risks. As no comprehensive international governance framework exists for SRM, the project aims to catalyze initial consideration by the UN General Assembly.
