Paris Peace Forum contributes to UN Working Group on Cybersecurity

The Paris Peace Forum contributed this week to the third substantive session of the UN Open-ended working group (OEWG) on security of and in the use of information and communications technologies.

The OEWG is currently the main fora to discuss ICT governance in the context of international security, an issue being addressed at the UN since 2004. Acting on a consensus basis, participating states are invited to further develop the rules, norms and principles of responsible behavior in cyberspace, to clarify the applicability of international law to cyber operations, and to develop operational measures to ensure the stability and resilience of the global internet. While fundamentally operating on an intergovernmental basis, the OEWG is progressively welcoming inputs from stakeholders to inform the negotiation between participating states.

As an accredited organization for the 2021-2025 mandate of the OEWG, the Paris Peace Forum will brief the states on the work undertaken as part of the Paris Call for Trust and Security in Cyberspace and will emphasize the relevance of multistakeholderism to make cyberspace safer and more secure in such a shifting geopolitical context.

As securing cyberspace and ensuring its stability will require close cooperation among all actors worldwide, extended stakeholders’ involvement is key in designing an efficient security architecture in cyberspace.
