Thematic Events on 12 November 2024
The UN General Assembly in September 2024 marked significant progress on AI governance (Global Digital Compact, report from the High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence), highlighting the imperative of widely sharing AI’s benefits globally, particularly in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Numerous initiatives from philanthropic foundations, businesses, and governments already aim to ensure AI is leveraged for the Global South and SDGs. However, furthering this multi-stakeholder dialogue is crucial as we approach the AI Action Summit in February 2025 in Paris, which focuses on public interest AI.
This working session will build on the discussions from the previous day’s high-level panel on the topic, allowing participants to engage deeply on potential governance frameworks and to collaboratively develop actionable proposals that align AI’s role with global development and public interest goals.
Location: Association des Maires de France, 41 quai d’Orsay, 75007 Paris
By invitation only.
Project Liberty Institute (PLI) and Global Solutions Initiative (GSI) would like to convene around 30 key experts to join an exclusive multi stakeholder consultation. This consultation is part of a global initiative aimed at reshaping the global data landscape by exploring the government’s pivotal role in fostering a more distributed and equitable data economy. The insights gathered from policymakers, academics, and leading practitioners, during this consultation and the following one in Washington D.C., will help develop actionable strategies for advancing a more equitable data economy in the age of artificial intelligence. The consultation will be held under the Chatham House Rule, ensuring open and constructive dialogue.
Location: N206, McCourt Institute, 1 Saint Rue Thomas 75007 Paris
By invitation only.
The idea is to organize an event aimed at students/young researchers interested in responsible AI research, without necessarily having a technical background, and to invite professionals from these various fields to better understand their differences/similarities, the types of projects they are working on, etc. The format will either be multiple panels or several lightning talks. Some of the questions addressed will include:
- What is the state of the art in AI governance practices in French companies?
- How is civil society collaborating with industry to facilitate the development of responsible AI?
- How is academic research being applied in other sectors, and what could academia do to make its research more applicable?
The idea is to end the session with a more advice-focused part in small groups with the various speakers/professionals present on “how to get started in responsible tech.”

ATIH recently opened a branch in Paris and held its first meetup in August. Following the success of the Paris event, as well as similar events in London and other cities around the world, All Tech Is Human Paris is planning to organize a conference on AI governance.
Location: Sciences Po Paris, 27 rue Saint-Guillaume, Room Jeannie de Clarens
How can we promote the development and use of responsible AI systems in the interest of society? How can we propose a solution that works worldwide and tackles the information asymmetry between users and AI companies? How can we put the public interest and fundamental rights at the heart of defining AI standards?
This is what the Forum on Information and Democracy’s novel idea, the creation of a voluntary certification mechanism for public interest AI, inspired by the success of the Fairtrade movement, is all about. Published in September 2024, our policy brief Exploring a voluntary certification mechanism for public interest AI presents how such a mechanism could be governed as well as the potential assessment criteria.
Join us for an interactive workshop to bring the idea to life. Participants will be invited to reflect on the pertinence of the idea as well as of the governance structure of such a mechanism. Who should lead the development of the assessment criteria to ensure credibility and uptake?
