The Route de la Jacinthe d’Eau ("Water Hyacinth Road") project targets women and young people in the lake areas of Ganvié, who are facing ecosystem degradation, dwindling fish stocks, and unemployment.
It transforms water hyacinth, an invasive plant, into an economic and ecological opportunity through value-added activities (composting, crafts, ecotourism). The project strengthens climate resilience, promotes economic empowerment, and raises awareness of aquatic environment preservation.
It has already trained 570 women and 285 young people, created 1,500 prototype handicrafts, and launched an ecotourism circuit. It is supported by local actors (town hall, ATDA, village chiefs, district chiefs), NGOs (Green Keeper Africa) and technical partners (Agence National des Patrimoines Touristiques).
JEVEV ONG is a youth organization active in Benin, committed to the environment, the green economy, and the empowerment of young people, women, and vulnerable groups. It works toward sustainable and inclusive development. It supports the project by coordinating field activities, training, community mobilization, and awareness-raising, in line with its mission to combat poverty and the effects of climate change.
