The Fagnako project aims to restore 10,500 hectares of degraded land in eastern Madagascar. It seeks to improve the living conditions of local communities through agroforestry, in particular using Pongamia, a tree that grows naturally on the island and is both resilient and nitrogen-fixing.
The project creates sustainable economic opportunities (400 permanent jobs and 3,000 seasonal jobs for seed harvesting), improves food security, and restores soils. Nearly one million trees have been planted since 2023, representing 3,000 hectares restored.
Designed as a proof of concept, Fagnako is intended to be replicated in other degraded areas of the African continent with similar climatic conditions. It is led by Canopy Energies, in partnership with technical experts, local authorities, and civil society actors.
Founded in 2008, Canopy Energies is a private company that became a mission-driven company in 2023. It develops impact projects in Africa, combining energy transition, reforestation, and local development. Canopy designs, finances, and implements sustainable, nature-based solutions in partnership with public, private, and community stakeholders. Its projects are currently underway in Madagascar, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Cameroon.
