“No country should have to choose between fighting poverty and protecting the planet.” This quote comes from the report following the Summit for a New Global Financial Pact, held in June 2023, which highlighted the need for international financial architecture reform, addressing a dual challenge: the development of emerging countries and environmental protection. As our world fractures more each day, with rising poverty, inequality, historic debt, and climate and health crises wreaking havoc on the “Global South,” these nations justifiably feel neither represented nor supported by international institutions like the IMF or the World Bank. Some have turned to other multilateral banks supported by the BRICS, which have seen their influence grow in recent years, establishing their own developmentbank and currency reserve.
This underscores the emergence of new players on the global economic stage, requiring a rebalancing of their representation in international institutions and addressing the challenges they face in co-constructing a new global financial system. Indeed, these emerging countries face difficult (if not impossible) choices: fighting poverty, educating future generations, investing in energy transition, or repaying debt.
This consensus was encapsulated in the Paris Pact for People and the Planet: a roadmap outlining actions to reform the international financial architecture, making it greener and more sustainable. One year later, where do we stand on these ambitions?

At 2.30pm, join Global Witness and frontline voices from affected communities for the launch of a new report on the violence and unrest linked to mining for transition minerals. Our mapping investigation reveals that almost 90% of over 300 reported incidents of protest, violence, and deaths related to mining these minerals between 2021 and 2023, occurred in developing economies, while wealthier nations continue to reap the benefits.
This event will explore systemic inequalities in the global energy transition and offer urgent solutions to prevent further injustices.
Location: OCDE Conference Center, 2 Rue André Pascal, 75016 Paris
At 4.30pm, the UN Department of Peace Operations (DPO) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will be pleased to present their recently-launched report, which explores the feasibility of operationalizing the linkages between two fields, i) responsible mining practices through due diligence in global supply chains and ii) disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) of ex-combatants from armed groups in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo as well as related community violence reduction (CVR) programming.
The report looks at how these linkages can be strengthened to improve outcomes in each area of work, including identifying entry points where artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) can contribute to livelihood options for ex-combatants’ return to civilian life.
