Project Summary

In 2019, a terrorist attacked Christchurch, New Zealand. A subsequent report found that the terrorist was inspired by content online. The Christchurch Call is a multistakeholder community response intending to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online. The Initiative on Algorithmic Outcomes is a part of the Call and specifically aims to better understand the role of algorithms in radicalization and develop effective interventions and technical solutions to limit radicalization. In its first phase, the initiative successfully developed, tested, and deployed the first algorithmic transparency system of its kind on multiple social media platforms with the support of several governments. In future phases, participants would like to scale the project into a global research network for algorithmic transparency.
