The educational offer of traditional non-formal Koranic schools in Mali and Senegal is strongly rooted in West African traditions. There are hundreds of thousands Talibés, the students in these schools, lacking access to basic learning and social services, risking mistreatment and abuse. To guarantee their inclusion in Malian and Senegalese societies, SIF works with public authorities and Koran teacher associations in Mali and Senegal on drafting new standards of Talibés’ education and protection. On the longer term, the aim is to achieve the development of national strategies for the integration of these non-formal schools into the formal educational system. This is an undeniable challenge for inclusion and peace, as Sahelian youth are experiencing a sharp deterioration of the socio-economic, environmental and security situation.
