Greener energy for a more sustainable world: Making it work

Taking place on the first day of COP 29 in Baku, this session will focus on the implementation of the energy outcomes of the COP28 in the UAE in December 2023 and the way forward. On that occasion, the first Global Stocktake affirmed that we are not on track to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. On a more positive note, the final consensus included an unprecedented reference to transitioning away from all fossil fuels to enable the world to reach net zero by 2050. However, discussions on the concrete implementation of such goal have not made any headway since. The urgency to phase down coal power in energy systems was also at the core of many diplomatic initiatives, which will need to be expanded and deepened. Panelists will explore what can be done to ratchet up climate action before the end of the decade. They will also discuss whether and how governments and businesses are turning the calls on Parties to take actions globally towards achieving a tripling of renewable energy capacity and doubling energy efficiency improvements by 2030 into real-economy measures reflecting the scale and urgency of the climate challenge.
