Panel
The current global order is undergoing major transformations: looming existential threats to humankind that an outdated multilateral system is failing to solve, increasing competition between great powers, and multiplying triggers such as the war in Ukraine and its fallout. Against this backdrop of faltering global leadership, rising powers are emerging and determined to play a bigger role in world affairs, as well as to move up global value chains. The recent addition of the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 is a powerful acknowledgement of Africa for instance, as the continent seeks a more important role on the global stage. Likewise, the recently enlarged BRICS+ group of nations, which now represents around 40% of the world's populations and more than a quarter of the world's GDP, has become one of the leading champions of stronger representation of the "Global South". In this session, experts from different continents will share the visions and ambitions of the emerging powers and what they can bring to the table for the future of global governance, as well as the direction they are steering the world towards.
