Introduction and Welcome words to the Forum – The Future of Ukraine at a crossroad

Peace, Geopolitics and Multilateralism

The future of Ukraine lies in the battlefield but also in the level of military and diplomatic support the country will receive until an exit is found out of the war launched by Russia and supported directly and indirectly by other powers.

In November, the American electorate’s choice will impact the balance of forces and the dynamic of a future peace negotiation, as it is unclear whether the next President-Elect would fully support President Zelensky’s “Victory plan” and its related requests for military assistance. Parties are also split regarding America’s global posture and military presence abroad between those in favor of a limited international US engagement and others who would prefer a redeployment of military resources to the Indo-Pacific, which in turn would mean more engagement needed from Europeans on the Ukrainian front and an evolution of the European security architecture. Additionally, the evolving weight of populist parties in Europe could also impact European foreign policy towards Ukraine. Last but not least, the impact of the conflict goes way beyond the West, and the positions of Global South states will be just as important in the diplomatic equation that could bring about a conflict resolution.

In such a pivotal moment, this session gathering high-level experts will look into the negotiation prospects and their possible fallout, as well as the reconstruction and future of Ukraine.
