Generating Local Value through Sustainable Mining

Protecting the planet and the people

(Session co-organized with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ)). The global shift towards sustainable energy sources and the resulting demand for minerals and metals presents significant challenges for countries rich in these resources. Yet these countries can benefit from increased demand by leveraging their mineral reserves for economic growth and diversification. By providing meaningful and stable jobs to the local population, mining can contribute to poverty reduction, social stability, and improved living standards. A shift from resource extraction to value addition within the country's borders can lead to greater economic benefits. This session will explore how mineral-rich countries can overcome challenges, leverage potential, and ask how consumer countries can best collaborate to create long-term economic benefits for all.
