Panel
Session co-organized with the Fair Cobalt Alliance.
The share of global mining production sourced from Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) is substantial (10-12% of the world’s cobalt supply), and is set to grow further as the demand for minerals essential to the energy transition increases. ASM is fundamental for livelihoods, employing an estimated 50 million people directly across the globe, and represents 90% of the global mining workforce. It serves as a critical source of development and employment opportunities, particularly in regions with limited economic alternatives. Despite the importance of ASM, it continues to be overlooked by policymakers and global institutions, even as we recognize the crucial importance of minerals for the energy transition.
During this session, speakers will explore the positive impact of policies effectively addressing the challenges of ASM and study how the extraction of transition minerals can become a driver of social economic development in producer countries and local communities though North/South collaboration.
