Due to climate change, extreme weather events are becoming a frequent occurrence, and cities are not prepared. Fragmented governance of river watersheds is misaligned with the necessity to make cohesive decisions about ecological systems that extend beyond administrative borders. Strelka KB’s Water Resilient Cities project develops a typology of urban design solutions and governance tools based on watersheds. Initial research applies this thinking to the Moskva River, reimagining the role of urban infrastructure, public space, sustainable stormwater management, and flood resiliency. The initiative aims to develop research to watershed governance recommendations, drawing on the example of the Volga River, and replicate in other locations.
