How do we effectively preserve the traces and evidence of our past when it is being destroyed? As the Past is the repository of humankind’s diversity of experiences, it is also the source of inspiration and solutions for a peaceful future. So, when confronted to its destruction, how do we preserve the information it conceals?

Iconem’s comprehensive approach relies on collaboration with local communities to implement high-resolution 3D scanning and ethnographic recordings of historic environments. From Afghanistan to Mali and Peru, new technologies help create hundreds of digital twins of these sites and their stories. These solutions are made available through an open access platform to share this knowledge and bring it where it’s needed, , contributing to preserving the memory of our societies and our cultures.

Iconem is a French company created in 2013 that specializes in 3D scanning of heritage sites and general digitization of cultural heritage across the world. It carries out projects on heritage at risk, being because of conflict, of climate change, urban encroachment or other. Our staff is composed of engineers, developers, architects, 3D artists, and archaeologists. Iconem has worked in over 30 countries on over 200 sites.

Impact

In 10 years, Iconem has digitally recorded over 200 sites in 30 countries, collecting over 3 million pictures and hundreds of interviews, training 120 young experts in 3D recording over the world.
