In 2020, Covid-19 caught the world by surprise, revealing significant gaps in early warning capabilities to detect and respond to emerging pathogens before they cause global harm. A more rapid and nimble system with robust global coordination is crucial for preventing future pandemics. The Milken Institute aims to create a global system of local and regional coordinating entities that would work alongside established institutions to mobilize surveillance activities. By addressing the threat of future pandemics now, we stand a greater chance in the long-term of having an effective early warning system that is ready to signal the next potential threat.
