Biography

Gareth Evans was a Cabinet Minister in the Australian Labor Party Governments of Hawke and Keating from 1983 to 1996, including as Foreign Minister from 1988 to 1996. He played key roles in the Cambodian peace process, the creation of APEC and the ASEAN Regional Forum, and in finalizing the Chemical Weapons Convention. After leaving politics, Evans served as President of the International Crisis Group (2000-2009) and Chancellor of the Australian National University (2010-2019), where he now holds the title of Distinguished Honorary Professor. He co-chaired the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (2001), which introduced the "responsibility to protect" concept, and the Australia-Japan International Commission on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (2009). Evans has authored or edited 14 books, including Good International Citizenship (2022), Incorrigible Optimist (2017), The Responsibility to Protect (2008), and Cooperating for Peace (1993).
